Blown Engine Moves Newman to Back of His 150
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Ryan Newman will move from to the back row for Thursday’s second 150-mile qualifying race after replacing an engine following today’s morning practice.
“Something just let go,” Newman said. “It’s so unfortunate, but these guys have got another bullet they can bolt in there and we will be ready to go.”
“Something broke in the engine,” Newman said. “I’m not really sure what. Obviously the horsepower has been great in qualifying and it felt strong out there, but I was just coming up through the gears and getting up to speed and something let go. It’s unfortunate. But these guys have got another bullet they can bolt in there and we’ll be good to go.”
Stewart-Haas Racing get their engines from Hendrick Motorsports. Hendrick crew members are helping investigate what caused the problem.
“There’s always that chance when you’re using multiple engines from an organization like that,” said Bobby Hutchens, the director of competition at Stewart-Haas. “It can roll over. Hopefully, this is an isolated case. Until we get it broken down and find out what happened I’m sure they’re all pretty concerned,”
Newman was back in his Cup car after finishing sixth in the Tour Type Modified feature Tuesday at New Smyrna.
