‘Dega Delivers Top-20 as Stewart Gets Shuffled Out of Top-10 in Waning Laps

Tony Stewart emerged from Sunday’s Aaron’s 499 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway with an undamaged racecar and a 17th-place finish. Typically, a result like that would leave Stewart stewing, but at Talladega, where racing is a crapshoot and a driver’s result is dependent upon help from other drivers, the bar is set low. While no one was high-fiving the top-20 effort, crew members clad in Office Depot/Mobil 1 uniforms were happy to load a straight racecar into the team transporter, something that couldn’t be said for many of their counterparts. Certainly, a better result was the aim, and Stewart’s No. 14 Office Depot/Mobil 1 Chevrolet Impala was poised for at least a top-10 finish before race-long drafting partner David Gilliland had to let off the gas ever so … Read entire article »

Stewart-Haas Racing Aaron’s 499 Qualifying Report

Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 39 Haas Automation Chevrolet Impala, led the two-car Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) contingent in time trials at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway by qualifying 23rd for Sunday’s Aaron’s 499 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. Newman turned a lap of 54.206 seconds at 176.659 mph on the 2.66-mile oval. “We hoped to be a little closer to the top, but we’re in race mode so we’ll see what happens,” said Newman, who has a best Talladega finish of third, earned in the 2009 Aaron’s 499. “We feel like we have good racecars, for sure. Practice is obviously more realistic compared to what we do in qualifying. We’ll take what we have with the Haas Automation Chevrolet and run with it tomorrow.” Tony Stewart, driver of the No. 14 Office Depot/Mobil … Read entire article »

Late-Race Accident Collects Newman at Talladega

A late-race, multi-car accident made for another disappointing outing for Ryan Newman at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway in Sunday’s Aaron’s 499 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. For Newman, it was the third-consecutive race at Talladega in which he was collected in a late-race incident. The seven-car accident happened on lap 188 – the first of three attempts at green-white-checker finishes – when Newman was hit from behind by Joey Logano in the middle of turns three and four. Logano’s tap turned Newman around and sent him into the outside wall, leading to the multi-car pileup in which Newman’s No. 39 Chevy was hit multiple times. … Read entire article »

Stewart Survives Talladega

It was far from an official win, but in a garage area surrounded by damaged racecars from a crash-marred Aaron’s 499, Tony Stewart’s 16th-place finish in Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway was a victory, nonetheless. Crew chief Darian Grubb said it best: “We survived Talladega.” In a race that saw eight caution periods for 32 laps – four of which came in the race’s last 24 laps – survival was the name of the game. Yet, Stewart’s No. 14 Old Spice/Office Depot “Matterhorn” Chevrolet still showed some game as it led one lap early in the 200-lap event and was a part of a handful of charges to the front, the last of which put him second on lap 180 thanks to some helpful pushing from … Read entire article »

Hooking the Big Fish Takes Patience, Especially at ’Dega

KANNAPOLIS, N.C.– The always analytical Ryan Newman knows that you can’t rush a good thing. In Newman’s eyes, there’s a simple formula: if you put yourself in the right position at the right time often enough, then, sooner or later, the outcome will be favorable for you. Sometimes that favorable outcome takes a little longer than you hope. But eventually, you will find yourself the victor. … Read entire article »
