Monster Mile Frustrates Newman

For Ryan Newman, Dover (Del.) International Speedway has always been one of his favorite and best racetracks on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series circuit, but Sunday’s FedEx 400 benefiting Autism Speaks is a race that Newman and his No. 39 Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) team would rather forget. “I’ve never driven so hard for so little,” said Newman after the race. “I’m not trying to beat up the guys because they know and they’re just as frustrated as I am right now. We just couldn’t get it right today. No matter what change we made, we didn’t make our Haas Automation Chevrolet any better.” Unfortunately, Newman’s day was a disappointment from the drop of the green flag. After qualifying was rained out on Saturday, the field was set by taking the fastest lap … Read entire article »

Stewart Endures Down Day at Dover

The only positive for Tony Stewart in Sunday’s FedEx 400 benefiting Autism Speaks NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Dover (Del.) International Speedway was that in the fall of 1997, race officials lowered the distance of all Dover Sprint Cup races from 500 to 400 miles. Otherwise, a miserable Sunday drive at the 1-mile concrete oval in the capital city of Delaware would have been even longer for Stewart and his No. 14 Mobil 1/Office Depot Chevrolet team as the driver-owner of Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) battled an ill-handling car to an uncharacteristic 29th-place result. Stewart started the 400-lap event from 27th in the 43-car field and was able to crack the top-20 within the first 50 laps. Despite gaining several spots, Stewart radioed to crew chief Darian Grubb that he was … Read entire article »

Stewart-Haas Racing FedEx 400 benefiting Autism Speaks Qualifying Report

Rain canceled qualifying for the FedEx 400 benefiting Autism Speaks NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Dover (Del.) International Speedway. As a result, the 43-car field for Sunday’s 400-lap event was set by taking the fastest lap each driver posted during Friday’s two practice sessions, per new NASCAR rules for 2011. Tony Stewart, driver of the No. 14 Mobil 1/Office Depot Chevrolet Impala for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR), will start 27th. His SHR teammate, Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 39 Haas Automation Chevrolet, will start 28th. Stewart has won two Sprint Cup races at Dover, as he swept both events in 2000. Newman has three Sprint Cup victories at the 1-mile, concrete oval – he swept both races in 2003 and won the fall race in 2004. Five-time and reigning Sprint Cup champion … Read entire article »

Ryan Newman Press Conference Transcript

RYAN NEWMAN met with members of the media at Dover International Speedway and discussed racing at Dover, NASCAR probation and other topics. Full transcript and video at bottom: HOW HAS YOUR WEEK BEEN AND HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR THIS WEEKEND?: “It’s one of my favorite race tracks and coming off of Darlington — it’s usually a place you can carry over some of the things you learned from there to Dover. I enjoy the race track because it doesn’t change a whole lot, but because it’s demanding as well. Having a good finish at Darlington was good for our team to get back on that path and we need to continue that here at Dover.” WHAT HAS BEEN GOING WRONG AT DOVER FOR YOU SINCE 2003 AND … Read entire article »

Tony Stewart Press Conference Transcipt

TONY STEWART met with media and discussed practice and racing at Kentucky. FULL TRANSCRIPT: HOW WAS PRACTICE? “Oh, I’m encouraged by it. I’m cautiously optimistic; we’ll see. But I was pretty happy with the way it ran in the first practice. I think we’re a lot better than the last couple of races that we’ve been here, for sure. So we’ll wait and see.” ON KENTUCKY, YOU’VE NEVER RACED THERE AND SEVERAL OTHERS. DOES THAT PUT YOU BEHIND GOING IN THERE OR IS IT GOING TO BE PRETTY SIMILAR FOR EVERYBODY? “Oh, there’s guys who have run the Nationwide race there that know the track. It’s no different than when we all ran our first races at Dover or anywhere else. We’ll have a … Read entire article »

Tony Stewart – Middle Management

KANNAPOLIS, N.C.  – Like many Americans, Tony Stewart is in middle management. Even though he’s his own boss at Stewart-Haas Racing – the two-car NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team he co-owns with Haas Automation founder Gene Haas – the championship point standings indicate he’s not the leader, but he’s not working the mail room either. He’s right in the middle. Ten rounds into the 36-race Sprint Cup schedule, and just 16 races away from the Chase for the Championship, Stewart is a respectable seventh in points, 65 markers arrears series leader Carl Edwards and 26 points ahead of 11th-place A.J. Allmendinger. It’s not where Stewart wants to be, but he’s far from being shown the door, even as the 11th and … Read entire article »

Newman looks to tame the “Monster Mile” once again

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – “Adversity does not build character…it reveals it.” – James Lee Allen For Ryan Newman and his No. 39 Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) team, actions speak louder than words. After being embroiled in a week of controversy both on and off the track, it would have been easy, maybe even expected, for Newman and his No. 39 SHR team to be negatively affected by all the distractions. Instead, Newman & Company showed just how strong they were during last weekend’s Showtime Southern 500 at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. The team unloaded as the quickest car in the garage, qualified on the outside pole and, despite battling an array of handling issues, fought its way to a fifth-place finish. It was Newman’s fourth top-five finish … Read entire article »
