Newman Rallies to 17th after Being Two Laps Down

Indianapolis – Indiana native Ryan Newman staged an impressive comeback in Sunday’s Brickyard 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, proving why his No. 39 Haas Automation team lives each race weekend with a never-give-up attitude. Back-to-back flat tires early in the race trapped Newman two laps down and dropped him to as low as 39th in the 43-car field, but thanks to the team’s tenaciousness, Newman was able to get back on the lead lap with 15 laps remaining and finish a respectable 17th. … Read entire article »

CAN THIS RACE TURN YOUR SEASON? “Any race can turn a season. Obviously the bigger races mean more and have more in the public eye. But from a racing standpoint, any win is a great win. Tony Stewart – Knick Knack Collector

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Racecar drivers collect numerous mementos during the course of their respective careers, from helmets and firesuits to chunks of asphalt and steering wheels, and when they reach the end of their careers – rocking chairs. But of all the knickknacks drivers pick up as they rise from upstart rookie to cagey veteran, ones from the hallowed grounds of Indianapolis Motor Speedway are perhaps the most coveted. That the speedway is in its centennial era has much to do with drivers’ reverence for the 2.5-mile oval. It’s been hosting automobile races since 1909, and not just any race, but the Indianapolis 500. And because of its archaic – at least in racing terms – lineage, parts of Indy’s surface, namely the frontstretch, remained clad in bricks until 1961 when … Read entire article »

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – For Indiana native Tony Stewart, one event on Memorial Day weekend used to trump all others – the Indianapolis 500. But after 30 years of racing competitively – 12 of which have been spent in the elite NASCAR Sprint Cup Series – the Greatest Spectacle in Racing has, believe it or not, taken a backseat to the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway. Memorial Day weekend provides a motorsports mosaic, from stock cars in Charlotte to sports cars in Lime Rock, Conn., to the cornerstone of the weekend – the Indianapolis 500. Stewart pays attention to all of it, and for the better part of his career, Indy reigned supreme. And why not? … Read entire article »
