“The Office Depot Foundation and The NASCAR Foundation make a real difference in the lives of children and communities, and I’m proud to support their work,” said Tony Stewart, who helped The Office Depot Foundation donate more than 300,000 backpacks to children in need during the 2009 back-to-school season.

“I definitely plan to ‘get my pin on’ for NASCAR Day, and I hope every NASCAR fan will do the same by picking up their own pin at an Office Depot store today.”

Stewart is a longtime supporter of NASCAR Day and one of several drivers who appear in the 2010 NASCAR Day commercial. NASCAR Day is an annual charitable celebration of the NASCAR spirit that enables fans and corporate partners to join together to make a difference in the lives of children. Since it began in 2004, NASCAR Day has raised nearly $8 million for charity.

“The Office Depot Foundation is so pleased to partner with NASCAR and The NASCAR Foundation, as well as NASCAR fans everywhere,” said Mary Wong, president of The Office Depot Foundation. “Collectively, we can make a positive impact on the lives of so many children and communities in need, and NASCAR Day is a wonderful way for us to achieve that goal together.

The co-owner of SHR along with Oxnard, Calif.-based Haas Automation – the largest CNC machine tool builder in the western world – turned a lap of 39.586 seconds at 181.882 mph on the 2-mile oval.
“We’re actually pretty solid here,” said Stewart, who has nine top-10 finishes in 17 career Sprint Cup starts at Fontana. “The car felt good, but we’ll keep working on it tomorrow and make it better for Sunday.”
Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 39 Haas Automation Chevrolet Impala for SHR, qualified 18th. Newman turned a lap of 39.620 seconds at 181.726 mph.

Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 39 Haas Automation Chevrolet Impala for SHR, qualified 18th. Newman turned a lap of 39.620 seconds at 181.726 mph.

“I guess I didn’t push it hard enough. I’ve actually overdriven the car so many times here in qualifying that this time I tried something different, and I ended up not pushing it hard enough,” said Newman, who won the second pole of his Sprint Cup career at Fontana in 2002. “We had a pole-winning or second-place car in practice today, and I feel bad because I feel like I let the guys down. We had a really good Haas Automation Chevy in race trim in practice, and I think we’ll have a really good car come Sunday.”

Last week’s Daytona 500 winner Jamie McMurray captured his fourth career pole and his first at Fontana with a time of 39.185 seconds at 183.744 mph. McMurray’s Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates teammate, Juan Pablo Montoya, will start alongside McMurray on the outside of row one, as he timed in at 39.242 seconds at 183.477 mph. Clint Bowyer (39.317 seconds at 183.127 mph) was third, while Kasey Kahne (39.363 seconds at 182.913 mph) and Dave Blaney (39.364 seconds at 182.908 mph) rounded out the top-five.

Forty-six drivers attempted to qualify for the Auto Club 500. Those not making the cut in the 43-car field were Casey Mears, Johnny Sauter and Terry Cook.

Chevrolet swept the top-three spots thanks to the efforts of McMurray, Montoya and Bowyer. Ford was next best at the hands of Kahne. Toyota was third with Blaney, while the top Dodge came via eighth-quick Sam Hornish Jr. (39.385 seconds at 182.811 mph).

The Auto Club 500 gets underway at 3 p.m. EST on Sunday, Feb. 21 with live coverage provided by FOX beginning with its pre-race show at 2 p.m.

More than 500 total entries were received, and Stewart personally selected his favorite photos. Each winner received an HP bundle, including a computer, all-in-one printer, ink and photo paper.

The winners of the “Show Us Your 14” online photo contest are as follows:

GRAND PRIZE WINNER: Jeff Strangman of Seabrook, New Hampshire

Jeff Strangman never misses a NASCAR race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS), located roughly 65 miles northwest of his home in Seabrook, N.H., and the loyal Tony Stewart supporter is something of a celebrity among fans at the 1.508-mile track. Every season since 1996, Strangman has attended both Sprint Cup Series events at NHMS with his meticulously branded 1964 camper in tow. He parks in the same spot for each race and enjoys the enthusiastic response his rig gets from fellow fans. Last spring, Strangman estimates he spent 80 hours detailing and repainting the camper from orange to red to match Tony Stewart’s new look with the No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice team.

“This is as authentic and old school in NASCAR as you can get,”
Tony Stewart said about Strangman’s photo.

FIRST PRIZE WINNER: Melanie Hutchens of Hammond, Oregon

Hutchens’ four-year-old black lab, Isabelle, has one of the most colorful dog houses in the neighborhood. After reading about the Office Depot “Show Us Your 14” online photo contest, Hutchens – who was in the process of painting her home red – decided to extend the hue to Isabelle’s house and incorporated the No. 14 “paint scheme” as well. And if the paint looks a little wet in the shot, well, that’s because it probably was! Hutchens said she finished painting just in time to take this photo and submitted it three hours before the contest deadline. The longtime Tony Stewart fan is excited about her HP prize package and plans to share her winnings with others by donating a laptop to a charitable organization during the holiday season.

“The only person other than me in the dog house…sit…good boy!”
Tony Stewart said about Hutchens’ photo.

SECOND PRIZE WINNER: Diane Cox of East Alton, Illinois

Dedicated Tony Stewart fan Diane Cox and her four-year-old daughter, Mackenzie Cox, were inspired to build this replica of Stewart’s No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevy when Mackenzie and her pre-school classmates at Washington Elementary School in East Alton, Illinois, were assigned a school project to “build a car out of a box” during National Transportation Week earlier this year. It took Diane and Mackenzie – who likes to call her mom’s favorite driver “Tony Stewart Little” after her favorite Disney movie, “Stuart Little” – two days to build the colorful car.

“Somebody call the police; a cute young blond stole my car!”
Tony Stewart said about Cox’s photo.

“The Foundation believes strongly that we are helping children to build self-confidence, boost self-esteem and achieve greater success in the classroom – all as a result of being well-prepared for school,” states Foundation President Mary Wong, who will participate in the Indianapolis event. “We are extremely pleased to be able to donate our 2-millionth backpack at a time when so many children and families are dealing with the impact of the economic downturn.”

Stewart, who grew up in Columbus, Ind., and still resides there, will help host the backpack donation event as he prepares for the July 26 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series™ Allstate 400 at the Brickyard race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (Sunday, July 26, 1 p.m. EDT, ESPN). He is a two-time winner of the prestigious 400-mile race.

“I’m thrilled to partner with Office Depot and the Office Depot Foundation to donate 5,000 backpacks in my home state and help so many kids get ready to head back to school with the tools they need to succeed,” said Stewart, who has taken on the role of driver/team owner with Stewart-Haas Racing in 2009. “Education is the foundation for success no matter what career you choose, and it’s humbling for me to be part of such a terrific program.”

The non-profit organizations and schools selected to participate in the July 23 backpack donation event include:

    * Indianapolis Public Schools
* Metropolitan School District of Perry Township
* BackPack Attack
* Children’s Bureau, Inc.
* Covering Kids & Families
* Educational CHOICE Charitable Trust

In addition, representatives of three organizations that recently received backpacks from the Tony Stewart Foundation in collaboration with the Office Depot Foundation will attend:

    * Camp Riley
* Camp John Warvel-Indiana Area American Diabetes Association
* Happy Hollow Camp

In total, the Tony Stewart Foundation donated 5,600 backpacks to the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. in Stewart’s hometown of Columbus, Ind., Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis and six children’s summer camps and youth programs in Indiana, Ohio, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.

To distribute its backpacks in 2009, the Foundation is hosting 25 “Back-to-School Backpack Celebrations” in cities across the U.S. and Canada – five of which feature Tony Stewart. Thousands of backpacks also are being donated by Office Depot stores in hundreds of local communities and in collaboration with Office Depot’s Business Solutions Division in select cities.

Thousands more backpacks will be distributed through the Office Depot Foundation’s partnerships with several national non-profit organizations – including the Tony Stewart Foundation, the National Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Association, City Year, Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA), Feed The Children, the Kids In Need Foundation, Nourish America and the National Foundation for Women Legislators, whose members will give backpacks to children in all 50 states.
The donations will be made during a special “Back-to-School Backpack Celebration” beginning at 4 p.m. local time at the Office Depot store located at 2928 North Ashland Ave. in Chicago. In addition to Stewart, special guests scheduled to attend include Chicago Alderman Toni Preckwinkle and Dave Kornecki, Chief of Staff for U.S. Rep. John Fritchey.

This year, the Office Depot Foundation celebrates an extraordinary milestone as it donates its 2-millionth backpack since the inception of the National Backpack Program in 2001.

“The Foundation believes strongly that we are helping children to build self-confidence, boost self-esteem and achieve greater success in the classroom – all as a result of being well-prepared for school,” stated Foundation President Mary Wong. “We are extremely pleased to be able to donate our 2-millionth backpack at a time when so many children and families are dealing with the impact of the economic downturn.”

This Chicago event marks the first time that Stewart, who joined forces with Office Depot in 2009 as his primary sponsor in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series™, will host a backpack event with the Office Depot Foundation. He is scheduled to host several more events across the country throughout the year, and this weekend, his No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevy will feature a special back-to-school paint scheme during the July 11 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series™ Lifelock.com 400 race at Chicagoland Speedway (Saturday, July 11, 7:30 p.m. EST, TNT). The colorful paint scheme will feature images of many essential school supplies kids need in the classroom, including crayons, pencils, highlighters, a composition book, scissors and more.

“It’s great to team up with Office Depot and the Office Depot Foundation for the first backpack donation event of the year,” said Stewart, who has taken on the role of driver/owner in 2009 with his own team, Stewart-Haas Racing. “It’s humbling for me to be part of such a terrific program that truly makes a difference in the lives of so many kids by providing them with the tools they need to succeed at school.”

Stewart also said he was looking forward to sporting a special back-to-school paint scheme on his No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevy at Chicagoland Speedway.

<img style=' display: block; margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto;'  class="size-full wp-image-983 aligncenter" title="chicago" src="http://stewartent.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/chicago.jpg"

“I know a lot of kids probably don’t want to hear it, as it is the middle of July, but back-to-school time is right around the corner. The paint scheme we’ll run at Chicagoland reflects that, as it shows off all the products Office Depot has for parents to get their kids ready to go back to school,” Stewart said. “It’s like your shopping list is right on the race car.”

The non-profit organizations and schools selected to participate in the July 8 backpack donation event include.

Chicago Public Schools

PUSH for Excellence

Chicago Youth Programs

Casa Central

Jane Addams Hull House Association

Latino Organization of the Southwest

Jewish Child & Family Services

Communities In Schools of Chicago

Speedway Children’s Charities

While the scale of the Office Depot Foundation National Backpack Program is global, it makes a difference on an individual level for every child it reaches. “We have thousands of clients who can’t afford book bags and end up bringing their school supplies in a plastic grocery bag,” says Mark Tisdahl, In-Kind Manager and Group Volunteer Coordinator for the Jane Addams Hull House Association in Chicago. “The plastic grocery bag is ineffective in carrying school supplies and books, but it is also humiliating. Due to these generous donations, we have been able to end the humiliation of hundreds of students scared to go to school without a backpack.”

To distribute the backpacks, the Foundation is hosting 25 “Back-to-School Backpack Celebrations” in cities across the United States and Canada – five of which will also feature Stewart. Thousands of backpacks also are being donated by Office Depot stores in hundreds of local communities and in collaboration with Office Depot’s Business Solutions Division in select cities.
