Tony Stewart kept the pressure on championship point leader Carl Edwards by leading five times for a race-high 160 laps en route to a third-place finish in Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 500k NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Phoenix International Raceway. Stewart came into Phoenix only three points behind Edwards in the championship standings, and even though Edwards finished just one spot ahead of Stewart, the one bonus point Stewart earned for leading the most laps kept … Read entire article »

Newman Notches Third Straight Top-Five Finish at Phoenix
There’s no doubt that Ryan Newman was hoping for a little magic as he returned to Phoenix International Raceway as the defending champion of the Subway Fresh Fit 500k NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. After all, Newman started in the same spot, pitted in the same pit stall and drove the same No. 39 Tornados Chevrolet as he had last April when he got his first win with Stewart-Haas Racing. And while the outcome wasn’t the exact same, Newman and his No. 39 Tornados Chevrolet had another impressive run at the 1-mile oval, as they finished fifth. Newman led twice for seven laps during the 312-lap race, and he fought his way to his third consecutive top-five finish at Phoenix, and his first top-five of the season. “It was a good run … Read entire article »

Stewart Leads Four Times for 59 Laps En Route to Seventh Place Finish at Phoenix
With 25 laps to go in Sunday’s Subway Fresh Fit 500k at Phoenix International Raceway, Tony Stewart appeared poised to grab his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory of the season and the 40th of his career. He was leading after a strategic two-tire pit stop under green vaulted him from third to first, and with plenty of daylight between him and his pursuers, Stewart could simply wheel his No. 14 Office Depot/Mobil 1 Chevrolet Impala to the checkered flag. But when the yellow caution flag came out for debris on lap 287, Stewart’s strategy was sunk. The ill-timed caution period allowed those behind him to catch up, and with all having taken four tires to Stewart’s two, the driver/owner of Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) was a sitting duck. When the green flag … Read entire article »
