Pocono Equals Perfection in Racing and Fishing

Pocono Equals Perfection in Racing and Fishing

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – For Ryan Newman, this weekend’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway means two things – racing and fishing, and not necessarily in that order. The avid outdoorsman counts the trip to Pocono as one of his favorites each year because it affords him the opportunity to steal a few moments away from the racetrack and indulge himself in his favorite hobby – fishing. Newman travels around the Sprint Cup circuit with … Read entire article »

Newman Finishes Ninth at ‘Tricky Triangle’

Ryan Newman and the No. 39 Haas Automation team pinpointed Sunday’s 5-Hour Energy 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway as one that could turn the tide of their season and get them back on the right track. And after 500 miles around Pocono’s 2.5-mile triangle, that’s just what Newman and his Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) team did by finishing a solid ninth – the team’s sixth top-10 this season and first since a fifth-place finish at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway in May. The ninth-place effort didn’t come without some adversity, however. While Newman started eighth and ran in the top-10 for much of the day and the crew performed solidly on pit road, trouble struck late in the 200-lap race as Newman reported on lap 179 that he had … Read entire article »

Broken Gear Costs Stewart at Pocono

After starting 15th in Sunday’s 5-Hour Energy 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway and spending the first 123 laps of the 200-lap contest working on the handling of his racecar, Tony Stewart finally broke into the top-five for the first time on lap 124. Unfortunately on lap 126, he radioed to crew chief Darian Grubb that his No. 14 Mobil 1/Office Depot Chevrolet Impala had lost third gear. With drivers shifting in each of Pocono’s three turns throughout the 500-mile event, Grubb and Stewart knew that a top-10 finish was nearly impossible and had to settle for a disappointing 21st-place result. It was only the sixth time in 25 career Sprint Cup starts at Pocono where Stewart has finished outside the top-10. “We had a good car,” said … Read entire article »

The two-time Sprint Cup champion lost third gear with 74 laps to go while running in the top-five, but was able to finish the race on the lead lap. Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 39 Haas Automation Chevrolet Impala, led the two-car Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) contingent in time trials at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway by qualifying eighth for Sunday’s 5-Hour Energy 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. Newman turned a lap of 52.776 seconds at 170.532 mph on the 2.5-mile triangle. “We had a really strong Haas Automation Chevy in qualifying,” said Newman, who won at Pocono in August 2003. “I told the guys after my run that I think we probably had the pole in that car, I just didn’t quite get everything out of it that I needed to get. We’ll have a good car tomorrow, and we’re looking forward to it.” Tony Stewart, driver of the No. 14 Mobil 1/Office Depot Chevrolet Impala for SHR, will start 15th … Read entire article »

Ryan Newman Friday Pocono Press Conference Transcript

RYAN NEWMAN met with members of the media at Pocono Raceway and discussed racing at Pocono, Matt Borland’s position at SHR, fines in NASCAR and other topics. Full transcript: TALK ABOUT YOUR STRATEGY COMING INTO POCONO: “ It will be interesting. It puts the driver back a little bit more into the equation of things with respect to the shifting. The second part of the shifting is that it does change the handling of the race car so getting into a car that drives good when you don’t shift versus when you do shift just because of the fuel mileage situation with the big race track, that makes a difference as well. The combination of driver, crew chief and race car, is probably more important than it is most other race tracks … Read entire article »
