Ryan Newman FoxSports Video with Bonus

Ryan Newman was interviewed by Darrell Waltrip during the prerace show for the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway Saturday night. Here’s the video that made the cut for the show, followed by part of the interview that didn’t make it into the telecast. I’m not sure why the video quality of the bonus video is so much better than the part that was broadcast. The “bonus” video … Read entire article »

Newman Overcomes Adversity, Nets Fifth Place at Darlington

After being embroiled in controversy during the past week, Ryan Newman put all the conflict behind him and let his driving do the talking by finishing fifth in Saturday night’s Showtime Southern 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. It was Newman’s second top-five and third top-10 finish in the past three races at Darlington with his Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) team. “I’m really proud of all of the guys on the Tornados Chevrolet,” said Newman, who now has seven top-five finishes at Darlington in 13 career starts. “We battled some crazy conditions today. We went from being extremely loose to extremely tight, and we were really scratching our heads. We just really struggled with the racecar and then we finally hit on something and just decided to leave … Read entire article »

Ill-Timed Caution Curtails Stewart’s Solid Run in Southern 500

Despite finishing seventh in Saturday night’s Showtime Southern 500, Tony Stewart had one of his best races ever at the venerable Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. The tricky 1.366-mile oval has proven to be a challenge for Stewart, as the two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion had logged only three top-fives and nine top-10s in his 18 previous Sprint Cup starts at the aptly named “Too Tough to Tame” venue. But as soon as his Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) team unloaded his No. 14 Office Depot/Mobil 1 Chevrolet Impala for practice on Friday, Stewart was fast. He qualified a solid ninth and then climbed to second behind his SHR teammate Ryan Newman as Newman paced the field for the race’s first 28 laps. Stewart was a top-five mainstay, getting shuffled away from the leaders only when … Read entire article »

Tony Stewart Friday Darlington Media Visit Transcript

TONY STEWART met with media and discussed improving race car issues, last week’s race at Richmond, upcoming races at Dover and Charlotte, Mother’s Day, and more. Full Transcript: HOW WAS YOUR CAR IN PRACTICE? “Well, we only ran 15 laps, but I think we’re all right. We didn’t get out right away. We didn’t really run more than about four or five laps at a time so I’m not sure we really know 100 percent yet; but at least it looks decent on the sheet right now.” ARE YOU HAPPY WITH THAT OR WERE YOU HOPING TO GET MORE OUT OF IT? “So far I’m pretty happy with it. It seems pretty balanced. We’re just trying to figure out a couple of little things to try to anticipate what we think it’s … Read entire article »

Stewart-Haas Racing Showtime Southern 500 Qualifying

Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 39 Tornados Chevrolet Impala, led the two-car Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) contingent in time trials at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway by qualifying second for Saturday night’s Showtime Southern 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. Newman turned a lap of 27.255 seconds at 180.429 mph on the 1.366-mile oval. “I wasn’t sure what we could do with the sun coming out,” said Newman, who qualified on the pole for the 2003 Southern 500 at Darlington. “The first lap on the track, when it was close to green, was pretty nice because it was close to cool. I’m really proud of everybody at Stewart-Haas Racing. The Tornados Chevrolet was good off the truck. It was good in qualifying. We got a good starting spot and good pit selection. We’ll … Read entire article »

Time To Give Darlington ‘The Business’

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – How can an old-school track like Darlington (S.C.) Raceway not show an old-school racer like Tony Stewart some love? The two are kindred spirits, with an appreciation of racing history and little patience for glitz and glamour. The red-and-white striped walls that encompass Darlington’s 1.366-mile layout are akin to Stewart’s T-shirt and jeans persona. Yet, here’s Stewart, a two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion with 39 career victories and more than 11,430 laps led dating back to his rookie year in 1999, with no wins at Darlington and only 14 laps led in 18 career starts. Where’s the reciprocity? Doesn’t the “Lady in Black” know that Stewart is a throwback racer, drawing comparisons to the ultimate … Read entire article »

Newman Boldly Heading to the ‘Track Too Tough to Tame’

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Perhaps there is no better time for Ryan Newman’s No. 39 Chevrolet Impala to carry the tagline “Bold is How We Roll” than at this weekend’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Race at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. For if Newman and his No. 39 Tornados team want to tackle, tame and claim victory at the infamous 1.366-mile, egg-shaped oval, both driver and crew members know that each will have to be at the top of his game. In fact, it will take bold moves from the driver on the racetrack, gutsy calls by the crew chief and intrepid work on pit road by the crew to be successful at the “Track Too Tough to Tame.” Not only is Darlington one of … Read entire article »
