‘The Lady in Green’ Meets ‘The Lady in Black’
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – It’s been called the toughest of all tracks on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule. So much so that Darlington (S.C.) Raceway years ago was nicknamed “The Track Too Tough To Tame.” Darlington is an egg-shaped oval 1.366 miles in length – the odd shape because the western portion of the oval needed a tighter radius on the turns as founder Harold Brasington promised Sherman Ramsey, who owned a farm next to the … Read entire article »

Darlington A Tradition Like No Other
KANNAPOLIS, N.C., – It was a month ago when golf made its annual pilgrimage to Augusta (Ga.) National Golf Club for the Masters. The tradition-laden course crafted by golfing legend Bobby Jones in 1932 that began hosting the Masters in 1934 is an iconic venue – in golf and in sports in general. Roughly 145 miles north of Augusta up Interstate 20 sits NASCAR’s version of Augusta National. Darlington (S.C.) Raceway is NASCAR’s oldest venue. Built in … Read entire article »

For Newman It’s Not Just the Fishing that Makes Darlington a Favorite
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – It seems appropriate that Ryan Newman calls Darlington (S.C.) Raceway his favorite stop on the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit. As the story goes, the 1.366-mile oval is uniquely configured thanks to a pond that the owner refused to relocate when constructing the racetrack in the late 1940s. The track’s architect made one end of the track tight, narrow and high-banked while the other he made wide, sweeping and flat. The resulting egg-shaped oval has … Read entire article »

Ryan Newman FoxSports Video with Bonus
Ryan Newman was interviewed by Darrell Waltrip during the prerace show for the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway Saturday night. Here’s the video that made the cut for the show, followed by part of the interview that didn’t make it into the telecast. I’m not sure why the video quality of the bonus video is so much better than the part that was broadcast. The “bonus” video … Read entire article »

Newman Overcomes Adversity, Nets Fifth Place at Darlington
After being embroiled in controversy during the past week, Ryan Newman put all the conflict behind him and let his driving do the talking by finishing fifth in Saturday night’s Showtime Southern 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. It was Newman’s second top-five and third top-10 finish in the past three races at Darlington with his Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) team. “I’m really proud of all of the guys on the Tornados Chevrolet,” said Newman, who now has seven top-five finishes at Darlington in 13 career starts. “We battled some crazy conditions today. We went from being extremely loose to extremely tight, and we were really scratching our heads. We just really struggled with the racecar and then we finally hit on something and just decided to leave … Read entire article »

Ill-Timed Caution Curtails Stewart’s Solid Run in Southern 500
Despite finishing seventh in Saturday night’s Showtime Southern 500, Tony Stewart had one of his best races ever at the venerable Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. The tricky 1.366-mile oval has proven to be a challenge for Stewart, as the two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion had logged only three top-fives and nine top-10s in his 18 previous Sprint Cup starts at the aptly named “Too Tough to Tame” venue. But as soon as his Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) team unloaded his No. 14 Office Depot/Mobil 1 Chevrolet Impala for practice on Friday, Stewart was fast. He qualified a solid ninth and then climbed to second behind his SHR teammate Ryan Newman as Newman paced the field for the race’s first 28 laps. Stewart was a top-five mainstay, getting shuffled away from the leaders only when … Read entire article »

Full Transcript: HOW WAS YOUR CAR IN PRACTICE? “Well, we only ran 15 laps, but I think we’re all right. We didn’t get out right away. We didn’t really run more than about four or five laps at a time so I’m not sure we really know 100 percent yet; but at least it looks decent on the sheet right now.” ARE YOU HAPPY WITH THAT OR WERE YOU HOPING TO GET MORE OUT OF IT? “So far I’m pretty happy with it. It seems pretty balanced. We’re just trying to figure out a couple of little things to try to anticipate what we think it’s … Read entire article »
