Smooth Stewart Finishes Second at Pocono
Tony Stewart survived rain delays and a red-flag period to score a runner-up result in Sunday’s Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway. It was the third second-place finish of 2010 for the driver of the No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevrolet Impala for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR), with the others coming in March at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway and in June at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon. It was also the fourth time in the last five Sprint Cup races at Pocono that Stewart has finished third or better – a stat that includes his first point-paying win as a driver/owner with SHR on June 7, 2009. … Read entire article »

Pit Call Lifts Newman to 12th-Place Finish in Pocono
LONG POND, Pa. – A strategic pit call late in the race by crew chief Tony Gibson pushed Ryan Newman to a 12th-place finish in Sunday’s Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 Sprint Cup event at Pocono Raceway. With rain threatening when the final caution was waved on Lap 166 of 200, Newman’s No. 39 U.S. Army Chevrolet was positioned in 24th place. What added to the suspense following the caution was that NASCAR red-flagged the race to clean up debris following an accident involving Kurt Busch and Elliott Sadler. After a 30-minute delay the lead-lap cars came down pit road and that’s when Gibson called for fuel only, which vaulted Newman to eighth place in track position. … Read entire article »

Stewart Earns The Pole at Pocono
LONG POND, Pa. – Tony Stewart, seeking his first win of 2010, is used to starting up front at Pocono Raceway—but this time he earned it during time trials. With a lap at 171.393 mph Friday, Stewart claimed the Coors Light Pole Award for Sunday’s Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 at the 2.5-mile triangular track. He edged Juan Pablo Montoya (171.096 mph) for the top starting spot in the second NASCAR Sprint Cup Pocono race of the season. Stewart claimed the pole for both 2009 Pocono races under rainout rules, which order the field according to owner points, but those poles don’t count in official statistics. In the June race last year, Stewart actually started from the rear of the field after crashing during practice and going to a backup car. … Read entire article »

Stewart Showing Long-Term Gains Since Last Stop in Long Pond
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Six races have passed since the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series last raced at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa., and ironically, six races remain before the top-12 drivers in points will vie for this year’s championship as part of the 10-race Chase. When Tony Stewart came to Pocono on June 6 for round 14 on the 36-race Sprint Cup schedule, he was an uncharacteristic 16th in the championship standings, 27 points out of the ever-important top-12. His best finish was a second-place effort in March at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway and he had just three other top-10 finishes. It was a stark contrast to the first 13 races of 2009, where in Stewart’s inaugural year as a driver/owner with Stewart-Haas Racing, he had six top-fives, nine top-10s, was … Read entire article »

Newman and Army Team Taking Battle to Pocono
LONG POND, Pa. – The Chase clock is ticking and no one needs to tell the No. 39 U.S. Army team and driver Ryan Newman what they need to do in order to be one of the 12 teams competing for the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup championship. “We’re well aware of our position and well aware of what we need to do,” stated Newman, who has been a Chase participant three times, including last year — his first season with Stewart-Haas Racing. With six pre-Chase races remaining, including Sunday’s event at Pocono Raceway, Newman is currently in 15th place, 147 points from 12th, the cutoff for making the Chase. … Read entire article »
