Ryan Newman Hopes to Add One More to the Résumé
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Ryan Newman has won 18 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races during his career and they’ve come on tracks that are .75-mile, 1 mile, 1.5 miles, 2 miles and 2.5 miles in length. But he’s never won on a road course and he’s never taken the checkered flag at a half-mile track. The road course races at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., and Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International are complete for 2011, but he can … Read entire article »

Stewart Solid but Snake-Bitten at Martinsville
Tony Stewart rallied back from two pit-road miscues but could not overcome a flat right-front tire with less than 10 laps remaining and finished a disappointing 24th in Sunday’s TUMS Fast Relief 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway. The driver of the No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevrolet Impala for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) was 13th on lap 490 of the 500-lap event, but the flat right-front tire forced him to pit road under green and he lost two laps and 11 valuable positions. Stewart started sixth, but early on could not get his car to rotate through the center of the corners as well as he and crew chief Darian Grubb would’ve liked. After a lap-50 pit stop, which included four tires, fuel and a wedge adjustment, … Read entire article »

A Tale of Two Martinsvilles for Newman
For the first half of Sunday’s TUMS Fast Relief 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway, Ryan Newman clearly had one of the cars to beat with his No. 39 Tornados Chevrolet Impala for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR), which led twice for 32 of the opening 127 laps of the 500-lap event around the .526-mile paperclip-shaped oval. But on lap 247, just before the race’s halfway point, Newman radioed to crew chief Tony Gibson that he had a broken rear gear. Within the next five laps, Gibson directed him to the garage, where the Tornados crew swapped transmissions and replaced the unit and driveshaft. The repair took 42 laps in all, and Newman rejoined the race in the 37th position on lap 293. He went on to pick up … Read entire article »

Stewart-Haas Racing TUMS Fast Relief 500 Qualifying Results
Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 39 Tornados Chevrolet Impala, led the two-car Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) contingent in time trials at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway by qualifying fourth for Sunday’s TUMS Fast Relief 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. Newman turned a lap of 19.527 seconds at 96.973 mph on the .526-mile oval. “It was better than what we had in practice after we made some changes,” said Newman, who qualified on the pole for the fall Martinsville races in 2002, 2004 and 2009. “When you can make changes and they turn out for the good, that’s a good thing. I guess we were really disappointed this past spring when (qualifying) got rained out because we were P1 in practice. Today, we were P25 and beat a bunch of guys who beat … Read entire article »

Tony Stewart Is A Martinsville Elitist
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (Oct. 20, 2010) – Tony Stewart is part of an elite group. Believe it or not, it’s not because of his two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championships. Or 39 career Sprint Cup wins. Or 1997 IndyCar Series title. Or four USAC championships. No, it’s because he’s one of just four active drivers who have won at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway since 2003, a span of 15 races. Stewart scored the second of his two career Sprint Cup wins at Martinsville on April 2, 2006. It was a rare sight, for since 2003, the only other active Sprint Cup drivers to visit Martinsville’s victory lane have been Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Denny Hamlin. (Rusty Wallace, now retired and a NASCAR analyst for ESPN, scored his last Sprint Cup win at … Read entire article »
