Tony Responds to a Stupid Question from a Reporter

Viv Bernstein was in Daytona last week to cover NASCAR for the New York Times.   She provided a perfect example of why Tony sometimes hates to deal with print reporters.  Not because she asked the same question that local reporters ask him every week.  Remember last year when every week some newspaper reporter would ask, “Are you surprised at how well your team is doing?”  No Viv actually asked what may have been the stupidest question I have ever heard someone ask a driver.

“Do you feel like it’s too safe out there? That maybe fans like the danger a little bit.”

Here’s the video.

There is some misunderstanding of the question I asked Tony. I stated in my question that Dale Jarrett suggested NASCAR had become too safe because fans perhaps liked the danger of the sport, and asked Tony to comment on Jarrett’s remark.

I had a discussion with Tony after the press conference. His discomfort with the question, I believe, has to do with his mistaken belief that I was trying to goad him into criticizing NASCAR. If you’ll recall, Tony got in some trouble for his remarks about yellow flags a few years ago, so he is very careful to avoid any confrontational comments.

Thank you for allowing me to comment.
